What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botox injection (Botulic toxin) Bordeaux

Botulinum toxin (or botulinum toxin) marketed under the name BOTOX® is known worldwide on the aesthetic medicine market. Botox reduces facial expression lines.

With age, contraction of facial muscles, environmental factors and lifestyle cause permanent wrinkles to appear. These wrinkles and fine lines can give an aged look and cause discomfort in some people.

Botox® is a natural protein substance, a derivative of botulinum toxin synthesized from Clostridium botulinum. It restores muscle balance by relaxing the skin of the face with a more relaxed look, while keeping a natural expression for several months.

Note that there are different brands of Botulinum Toxin: Botox®, Vistabel®, Bocouture® and Azzalure®. All these products are approved by the high health authority and are very reliable.

Doctor Delobaux, plastic surgeon in Bordeaux, is specialized in the injection of botox. He is surrounded by a highly qualified team and a quality service to take the best care of your face.

Goals of Botox for facial wrinkles

Botulinum toxin injection aims to treat forehead wrinkles by relaxing the frontalis muscle which causes horizontal wrinkles, wrinkles around the eyes caused by the orbicularis muscle and also the glabellar muscles, which cause frown lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows).

Candidates for Botox injections

No one escapes the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead. Habits, sometimes banal, even contribute to their appearance such as the contraction of the muscles of the face for various reasons such as during exposure to strong light, or during poor eyesight. Wrinkles therefore appear at varying ages, depending on the thickness of the skin and the person, even from the age of 25.

What areas are treated with botox?

Do you ride lion

Between the eyebrows are vertical wrinkles, which can be single or multiple.

Forehead wrinkles

These are wrinkles due to movement by the contraction of the different muscles of the forehead. The injection of Botox will therefore reduce them, or even erase them.

Lower eyelid

Botox injection will reduce the wrinkles of the lower eyelid and the small oblique fine wrinkles at the level of the lower eyelid.

Lip wrinkles

They appear during facial expression. Botox is effective against these wrinkles due to muscle contraction.

Nose wrinkles

Located on the sides of the nose and visible when you wrinkle your nose, Botox is also effective in erasing these wrinkles.

Cervical cords

Related to the contraction of the lamina muscle of the neck. Botox is just as effective there by injection into the cords of the neck.

Eyebrow lift

The injection of botox effectively fights against the fall of eyebrows.

Tip of the nose

The tip of the nose often droops when we speak or smile. The injection of botox reduces the contraction of the muscle responsible for lowering the tip of the nose.

Ply of bitterness

Injections of hyaluronic acid are also involved in the treatment of bitterness folds

Reduce the jaw

A botox injection can reduce the width of the jaw

Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis of the hands and armpits

Botox is also indicated in the treatment of excessive sweating of the hands, feet or armpits.

Procedure of a botox session

The injections last from 10 to 30 minutes per session, depending on the extent of the work to be done and the quantities of Botox® to be injected. This requires precision and should therefore be done by an experienced practitioner. Before the sessions, Doctor Delobaux first analyzes the patient's face in consultation in order to balance the strength of the different muscles, favoring certain muscles by inhibiting others. The face thus becomes smooth, rejuvenated, while retaining its capacity for expression as well as its natural appearance.

Before the botox injection session

The consultation with Doctor Alexis Delobaux will take place during medical visits.

Stopping aspirin or anti-inflammatories is strongly recommended 8 days before the injection of Botox ®.

It will also be necessary to sign the estimate, the informed consent, and the medical photographs which will be systematic.

Between the first consultation and the injection of botulinum toxin, a reflection period of 15 days will be given to the patient.

Depending on the amount of Botox to be injected, the session will be 10 to 20 minutes.

The patient can go home after the session.

The classic consequences of botox injections

Botox injection sessions usually pass without complications. After the injection, some slightly swollen marks remain for 20 to 30 minutes and then disappear on their own.

The side effects of Botox are rare and transient, such as:

Redness: the injected area takes on red marks but this rarely lasts more than 2 to 3 days. eyes, swelling can set in little by little in 1 to 2 days, then disappears in a few days to a few weeks. Sensitivity disorders: depending on the injected areas, a change in sensitivity to the type of tension or fixity of the forehead , mouth or neck, can last for several days. Intense pain in the eyes or face: these have been declared exceptionally.

The result of botox injections

The results will be seen little by little around 3 days after the session and will be concrete about ten days later. Two weeks after the injection, an appointment will be scheduled to check the result, the patient's satisfaction and thus allow any alterations to be made.

Botox® has the effect of rejuvenating the face, giving it a relaxed, more confident and rested appearance. These effects are reversible and last between 4 and 6 months, and its duration of action increases with the years. One to two maintenance sessions per year are usually enough to maintain a good result.

What are the contraindications of botox?

Infection on the area where the injection will take place. Some diseases affecting the nerves and muscles such as myasthenia gravis. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: a pregnancy, even of only a few days, must necessarily postpone the date of the injections after the childbirth and possible cessation of breast-feeding. If in doubt, talk to your doctor who will know which tests to prescribe. What are the risks of botox?

Possible complications are:

Complications on the injected area and its surroundings. Headaches: they can appear during the first injections and only last a few hours to a few days. Lowering of the eyebrows (ptosis of the eyebrows): a moderate lowering of the eyebrows can take place, often due to the fact that they were already lowered before the Botox® injection. This usually disappears within a few weeks. Drooping of the eyelids (eyelid ptosis): occurs rarely (<1% of cases), and returns to normal within a few weeks. Discomfort with smiling and swallowing: slight abnormal movements, as well as discomfort with smiling can occur following the injection of Botox® in the lips, while in the neck, the injection can cause difficulty in swallowing.Dry eyes: sometimes the production of tears decreases, leading to keratitis, especially in contact lens users. Paradoxical contraction of a muscle and disorders of mimicry: the muscles where Botox® has been administered may have some spontaneous contractions a few days after the injection. This is not serious.

Regarding the slight imperfections, we note:

Fine remaining wrinkles. Defect of symmetry: especially during a pre-existing asymmetry (before the injection). As regards the general complications, they are exceptional: Allergies: eruption on the level of the skin, urticaria, general allergic reaction.
